In Order for BI or EPM to be Truely Pervasive Do we Need to Change the Pricing Model?
When a Business Intelligence or Enterprise Performance Management project is perceived it used to be assumed that the main users would be focused Knowledge Workers whose role was to identify corporate performance and bring it to the attention of the relevant manager.
In reality there have always been demands to share the knowledge across the organisation, but the cost of tools has been a potential inhibitor to greater use. Today this demand is getting greater attention as the demand for truly pervasive BI gathers momentum.
Is the vendor pricing model changing to allow wider use of BI tools?
According to Cognos (now part of IBM) the features and functionality of version 8 allow greater flexibility in the pricing model and therefore greater adoption across the corporation, with a range a capabilities at a range of costs, the less functionality the least cost. Pricing can be role or task based, which could be good news when rolling out solutions across the corporation.
I have seen other vendors similar models in the past, but in my experience the prices can still be too much (even for some Fortune 1000 corporations) especially in the current era that demands more effective BI and Performance Management for corporate success. Pervasiveness is no longer an option.
What do you think your BI vendor can do to spread the use of business intelligence tools?
